Morocco is a good place to learn in winter, when Europe is cold. Around Taghazout, Banana Beach, Devil's Rock and Tamraght have soft waves and plenty of surf schools, and the long right at Imsouane Bay is one of the easiest waves to ride for a long way. The famous points are for experienced surfers, so stick to the beaches until you can turn.

Where to learn, area by area
Taghazout · Taghazout & Imsouane
- Panoramas: Panoramas is a beach and reef set-up at the south end of Taghazout, with lefts and rights. It's one of the more consistent spots in the area and works best around low tide.

Tamraght & Aourir · Taghazout & Imsouane
- Banana Point: Banana Point is a right point at the river mouth in Aourir, named after the banana plantations behind it. It's a slower, softer wave than the Taghazout points, good for improvers and longboarders.
- Banana Beach: Banana Beach is the long beach between Aourir and Tamraght, where the river meets the sea. The waves are small and soft most of the time, and it's one of the main beaches for lessons in the area.
- Devil's Rock: Devil's Rock is a beach break below Tamraght, named after the rock at one end. Mostly lefts break over the sandbar, and it's best around mid tide.
- Tamraght Beach: The beach in front of Tamraght village is a sand-bottom beach break between Devil's Rock and Taghazout. It catches small swells and is a quieter place to learn than the busier beaches.
Boilers & Tamri · Taghazout & Imsouane
- Tamri: Tamri is a long beach at a river mouth north of Cap Ghir, with banana plantations behind it. It picks up more swell than anywhere around Taghazout, so it's usually bigger, and it's the place to check when the points are flat.
Imsouane · Taghazout & Imsouane
- Imsouane Bay: The Bay at Imsouane is a slow right that wraps around the point next to the fishing harbour and can run for several hundred metres. It's one of the longest waves in Morocco and a favourite with longboarders and beginners.
Essaouira · Essaouira
- Essaouira Beach: The main beach in Essaouira runs south from the old town. The bay is sheltered, so the waves are usually small and soft, and it's a good place for lessons.
A week here costs from about $264 with flights from Europe, or around $947 travelling comfortably. See other surf trips under $500 →
Sidi Kaouki · Essaouira
- Sidi Kaouki: Sidi Kaouki is a long, open beach in a small village south of Essaouira, with lefts and rights along the sand and some rocks. It's more exposed than Essaouira, so it gets more swell.
Safi · Safi & Oualidia
- Lalla Fatna: Lalla Fatna is a beach below high cliffs north of Safi, with waves breaking both ways along the sand. The tide doesn't change it much, and it works year-round.
A week here costs from about $292 with flights from Europe, or around $874 travelling comfortably. See other surf trips under $500 →
Oualidia & El Jadida · Safi & Oualidia
- Oualidia: Oualidia is a small town on a lagoon, known for its oysters. The beach outside the lagoon has beach and reef peaks, and inside the lagoon the water is calm.
- Sidi Bouzid: Sidi Bouzid is a beach and point a few kilometres south of El Jadida. It works best on a rising tide and gets busy when it's on.
Casablanca · Casablanca & Rabat
- Jack Beach: Jack Beach is a beach break a few kilometres west of Dar Bouazza, with lefts and rights. It's consistent and the waves are mostly easy, so it suits beginners and improvers.
A week here costs from about $327 with flights from Europe, or around $944 travelling comfortably. See other surf trips under $500 →
Tifnit & Aglou · Aglou & Sidi Ifni
- Sidi Moussa d'Aglou: Sidi Moussa d'Aglou is a fishing village near Tiznit, where fishermen still live in caves cut into the cliff. The reef here has lefts and rights and works best at high tide.
A week here costs from about $173 with flights from Europe, or around $674 travelling comfortably. See other surf trips under $500 →
Sidi Ifni · Aglou & Sidi Ifni
- Sidi Ifni: Sidi Ifni is an old Spanish colonial town with art deco buildings, on the coast south of Tiznit. There are beach and reef breaks in front of the town, including a right over reef.
