The Bay at Imsouane is a slow right that wraps around the point next to the fishing harbour and can run for several hundred metres. It's one of the longest waves in Morocco and a favourite with longboarders and beginners.

It's sheltered from the north wind and works best from mid to high tide. The fishing boats come in and out through the lineup, so keep an eye on them. With so many surf camps in the village, it gets crowded on good days, but there's plenty of wave to share.

Cathedral

Cathedral is the more exposed break on the north side of Imsouane village, under the cliff. It breaks over reef and sand, with peaks both ways, and it's faster and more powerful than The Bay.

It picks up more swell and needs lighter winds. The rips can be strong, so it suits intermediate and advanced surfers. When The Bay is too small, this is usually where the waves are.

Beyond the surf

  • Imsouane fishing port: Watch the boats come in and buy fresh fish to have grilled at the cafés above the harbour.

Getting to Imsouane and around Taghazout & Imsouane

Agadir airport (AGA) is about 40 minutes from Taghazout by taxi. Along the coast, most people use the local buses, shared taxis or a surf camp's van.

  • Airport taxi ($30-40): A fixed-price taxi from Agadir airport to Taghazout. Many surf camps arrange the pickup. Agree the price before you get in, or book through your accommodation.
  • Local bus 32/33 ($0.50-1): Cheap city buses run along the coast road between Agadir, Aourir, Tamraght and Taghazout. Board bags can be a problem on full buses.
  • Rental car ($25-40/day): A car makes it easy to chase swell up the coast and reach Imsouane in about an hour. Park in sight of the beach and don't leave anything in the car.
  • Surf camp van (Included or $10-20): Most camps drive guests to the best spot of the day as part of a surf package. Ask which spots they go to before booking.

Before you go

Booking: Book surf houses ahead for Christmas, New Year and February half-term in Europe, when Taghazout fills up.

Money: Take out dirhams at the airport or in Agadir. Taghazout has ATMs but they sometimes run out at weekends.

Health: Anchor Point, Boilers and Draculas are for experienced surfers; beginners learn at Banana Beach, Devil's Rock and Imsouane Bay. Booties help with sea urchins on the point rocks.

Avoid: Don't leave valuables on the beach or in a parked car, and don't paddle out at the points in the middle of the main peak if you can't handle the size.
