The wave
Pangandaran is a long beach below the nature reserve and one of the most popular seaside towns for Indonesian families. The waves are soft and reform on the inside, and it's a good place to learn.
The peninsula makes the swell smaller: whitewater for first-timers on the inside and waist- to chest-high peaks further out. Instructors and board rentals line the beach at low prices, and the water is warm enough that you don't need a wetsuit.
Weekends and public holidays are packed; midweek mornings are quiet and clean. Stick to the flagged swimming zones. Batu Karas is nearby when you're ready for a longer wave.
