The wave

Batu Karas is a slow left point inside a sheltered fishing bay near Pangandaran. It breaks over sand and scattered boulders with an easy takeoff and a long shoulder, and it's one of the best places in Indonesia to learn.

The bay turns raw swell into waist- to head-high lines and blocks the trade wind that blows out the open coast by mid-morning, so it's often glassy for much of the day. Beginners use the inside, longboards and mid-lengths suit the point, and a shortboard only makes sense on the biggest days.

The village is one quiet street of guesthouses, board racks and fish grills. Green Canyon is 20 minutes away for flat days. It gets busy with visitors from Bandung at weekends, so go midweek if you can.
