Java's kindest point break and one of the best places on Earth to fall in love with surfing. Batu Karas wraps into a sheltered fishing bay as a long, slopey left over sand and scattered boulders, a wave with no bad intentions: soft takeoff, endless forgiving shoulder, and rides long enough to practise everything twice.
The bay's shelter is the magic: it filters raw swell into orderly waist-to-head-high lines and blocks the trade wind that ruins open coasts by ten a.m. Result: surfable, often glassy conditions through absurd portions of the day and year. Learners own the inside reform; longboarders and mid-lengths rule the point; shortboards only make sense on the biggest days.
The village completes it, one lazy street of guesthouses, board racks and fish grills, Green Canyon's emerald gorge twenty minutes upstream for flat spells, and Bandung weekend crowds as the only rhythm to plan around. Stay midweek, log until your arms give out, eat grilled fish for less than the wax cost. Progression paradise.

The people's beach of Java. Pangandaran's west-facing sand runs for kilometres under the nature-reserve headland, serving soft, reforming beach-break waves to what is essentially Indonesia's domestic seaside holiday capital, and quietly doubling as a solid learn-to-surf venue.
The peninsula blunts the swell to friendly sizes: whitewater lanes for first-timers on the inside, waist-to-chest peaks out back for second-weekers working on their pop-up timing. Local instructors and board rentals cluster along the sand at backpacker prices, and the water is warm enough to make wetsuits a rumour.
It's not a 'scene', it's Javanese families, becak bicycles, grilled corn smoke and holiday noise, which is its own kind of wonderful. Weekends and national holidays get packed; midweek mornings are calm and clean. Hazards: flagged swimming zones (respect them), holiday-crowd chaos, and the odd cleanup set at the reserve end. Pair it with Batu Karas up the road: learn here, graduate there, all in one lazy week.

Beyond the surf
- Green Canyon (Cukang Taneuh): Wooden boats run upriver into a narrowing moss-draped gorge; swim the final stretch beneath dripping cliffs. Go at 8 am before the crowds and after dry weather for green water.
- Pangandaran National Park: The forested peninsula between the town's two bays, rusa deer, macaques, limestone caves and the quiet white-sand Pasir Putih beach on the far side.
- Citumang river tubing: Body-raft a spring-fed jungle river over small chutes and swimming holes, 30 minutes from Batu Karas. Guides and gear included in local packages.
