The wave

One of São Miguel's most consistent and best-loved beach breaks, a short drive from Ponta Delgada on the island's south coast. Populo breaks over dark sand in a series of manageable, well-shaped peaks, picking up more swell than most of the sheltered southern coastline thanks to its more open exposure.

It's become something of a local favourite precisely because it works more often than nearby alternatives, giving consistent, fun waves suited to a wide range of levels without the full commitment of the wilder north-coast spots. The black sand and green hillside backdrop make it a classic Azorean scene.

Keep it for a small-to-moderate swell for the friendliest conditions, it handles size reasonably well but stays approachable. A good default choice when you're not sure what else is working on the island, and close enough to town for an easy dawn session before breakfast.
