A rivermouth and beach break setup on São Miguel's north coast, breaking over dark volcanic sand right in front of the town that gives it its name. Ribeira Grande picks up swell from a wide window across the north Atlantic, producing punchy, workable peaks with an occasional longer right off the river mouth itself.

The setting is pure Azores: steep green hillsides, black sand, and water that stays cool and clean year-round thanks to the island's remote mid-Atlantic position. Being on the more populated north coast, it has a small, committed local surf scene rather than the emptiness found on some of the outer islands.

Come on a clean N-NW groundswell, and expect changeable weather at any time, the Azores' Atlantic position means fast-moving fronts. It's a solid, satisfying all-rounder and a good introduction to São Miguel's surf before exploring further round the island.

One of São Miguel's most consistent and best-loved beach breaks, a short drive from Ponta Delgada on the island's south coast. Populo breaks over dark sand in a series of manageable, well-shaped peaks, picking up more swell than most of the sheltered southern coastline thanks to its more open exposure.

It's become something of a local favourite precisely because it works more often than nearby alternatives, giving consistent, fun waves suited to a wide range of levels without the full commitment of the wilder north-coast spots. The black sand and green hillside backdrop make it a classic Azorean scene.

Come on a small-to-moderate swell for the friendliest conditions, it handles size reasonably well but stays approachable. A good default choice when you're not sure what else is working on the island, and close enough to town for an easy dawn session before breakfast.

A heavy right rivermouth point on São Miguel's south coast, likened by locals to a scaled-down version of Sunset Beach in Hawaii for its long, lined-up walls. Ribeira Quente rewards patience and can produce genuinely satisfying, sizeable rides when conditions align.

It's a less-visited corner of São Miguel, away from the main Ponta Delgada crowd. Come on a solid S swell for the best shape, and expect a serious, committed wave once it has any real size.
