The wave
Just across the estuary from Tamarindo, Playa Grande is a long, swell-magnet beachbreak that catches more size than its neighbours and rewards a pushing tide with punchy, well-organised peaks. It works across a wide band of swell directions, from south-west groundswell to winter's north-west pulses, and because the beach is long the crowd spreads thin compared to town.
The stretch is also a famous leatherback turtle nesting ground and sits inside Las Baulas National Park, so night access is restricted and the dune-backed scenery stays wild. It's a 20-minute walk or a 40-minute drive around the estuary from Tamarindo.
Fun and forgiving at smaller sizes for improvers, it steps up to hollow, hard-breaking peaks when a decent swell lands on the right tide. Bring a shortboard for the punchy days and a longer board for the mellow mornings.
