The wave

The next bay south of Tamarindo, Langosta trades the town crowd for a rocky rivermouth and a run of decent beach peaks. The rivermouth bar can organise into quality sand-bottom walls when the swell and tide agree, and the beaches either side pick up plenty of the same south-west energy that lights up Guanacaste.

It's an easy ten-minute move from Tamarindo but feels a world quieter, and the estuary scenery, mangroves, herons, the odd crocodile basking upriver, is part of the appeal. Mid-tide tends to bring out the best shape, with the rivermouth peak favouring surfers who can read a shifting bank.

Langosta isn't a great wave, but it's a reliable, uncrowded alternative for intermediates when Tamarindo's main peak is a zoo, and the paddle-outs off the rocks are straightforward if you time the sets.
