The wave
Close to Doña Ana, Puerto Caldera is a full-on jetty wedge that needs both size and east winds to produce its sucky, hard-hitting pits. When those two ingredients arrive it becomes a heavy, warping wave that ledges up off the structure, a world away from the peeling lefts nearby and strictly for surfers who relish a critical drop.
The setting is industrial, sitting near the commercial port, but the wave quality on the right day makes up for the lack of scenery. It's inconsistent and demanding, so it lives in the shadow of Boca Barranca for most visitors.
Watch for the days when a large south swell coincides with an easterly, board up for speed and steepness, and commit hard off the top. Caldera is short and intense, and best left to confident, experienced surfers.
