On a major swell, Boca Barranca is an endless peeling left, second only to Pavones in the whole country for sheer length, which is why it's long been chosen as a longboard competition site. The rivermouth pumps a cobbled bank into shape, and when a big south swell lands on a pushing tide the wave reels for a small eternity, made for stylish nose-rides and drawn-out cutbacks.
The catch is the water: the Barranca river carries the runoff of Puntarenas, so pollution is a genuine hazard, especially after rain. Nearby Doña Ana hides other quality lefts and rights for those wanting cleaner options.
Bring a longboard or a single-fin, favour the incoming tide and a solid south swell, and pick your days after dry spells. Boca Barranca is a piece of Costa Rican surf history, a marathon left that rewards patience and a smooth style over raw power.

Puerto Caldera

Close to Doña Ana, Puerto Caldera is a full-on jetty wedge that needs both size and east winds to produce its sucky, hard-hitting pits. When those two ingredients arrive it becomes a heavy, warping wave that ledges up off the structure, a world away from the peeling lefts nearby and strictly for surfers who relish a critical drop.
It's an industrial setting rather than a postcard one, sitting near the commercial port, but the wave quality on the right day makes up for the lack of scenery. It's inconsistent and demanding, so it lives in the shadow of Boca Barranca for most visitors.
Watch for the days when a large south swell coincides with an easterly, board up for speed and steepness, and commit hard off the top. Caldera is a specialist's wave, short on charm, long on intensity, and best left to confident, experienced surfers.

Tivives

Tivives is surprisingly polluted and hollow peaks aren't easy to find, but occasionally a barrelling rivermouth left fires off the point in a strong south swell, and on those rare days it's a genuinely quality wave for surfers willing to look past the water quality. It rewards local knowledge and good timing more than most spots on this coast.
The rivermouth needs real energy to organise, so this is a wave for the bigger swells rather than an everyday option. When it's on, the left throws a fast, cover-up-able section that few others will be around to share.
Board up for a punchy, sand-bottom barrel, target a solid south swell and pick your tide carefully. Tivives isn't a place to build a trip around, but for the exploratory surfer passing through Puntarenas province on the right swell, it can turn on a memorable, uncrowded session.
