The wave

Jardim do Mar is a long left point below a small village built up the cliff on Madeira's west coast. On a big winter swell it links several sections into some of the longest rides in Europe, and it's the wave that made Madeira known for big surf.

It breaks in deep water over sharp rock, and it gets dangerous fast as the size goes up. Unless you have real big-wave experience, watch it from the village, which is one of the best places in Europe to see big surf from land.
