Surfing Afife

A beach break in Viana do Castelo, Portugal, for intermediate surfers.

The wave

A quiet village beach break just north of Viana do Castelo, and one of the least crowded quality waves in mainland Portugal. Afife breaks over sand with occasional rockier sections, giving a slightly more defined, structured wave than the wide-open beaches typical of this stretch of coast.

It has a small but devoted local following who rate it as one of the better waves in the north, a genuine alternative for surfers who've had enough of the west coast's crowds further south. The setting is properly rural, green hills, small farms and a village rather than a resort town.

Keep it for a clean groundswell with light wind, and treat it as a peaceful base for exploring this whole northern stretch, from Espinho down to the Spanish border at nearby Caminha. Facilities are basic, so plan food and fuel stops in Viana do Castelo.
