A sheltered right-hand point tucked into a small bay near Sagres, and one of the more forgiving quality waves on this stretch of coast. Zavial breaks over a mix of sand and rock, giving a friendlier, more predictable wave than the exposed points further north.

The bay's shape protects it from the strongest wind, so it holds its shape even when other Algarve spots are blown out, a big part of its appeal. Rights peel from the point into the bay in a series of manageable, well-shaped sections, good for surfers stepping up from the beach breaks into their first proper point wave.

It works across a wide range of swell and wind directions thanks to the sheltered bay, which makes it one of the most reliable options in the Sagres area. Come on a small-to-moderate SW or W swell, and expect a friendly, mixed-level crowd rather than the intensity of the bigger west-coast points.

Tonel

A small, sheltered beach break tucked below the town of Sagres itself, and the easiest, most forgiving wave in the whole area. Tonel sits inside the lee of Cape St Vincent, which keeps it protected from the strongest Atlantic wind and swell, making it the local go-to on days when everything else is blown to bits.

The wave here is gentle and slow-building rather than powerful, breaking over sand in soft, workable peaks that are ideal for a first surf lesson or a mellow session away from the crowds at Arrifana or Amado. It rarely gets genuinely big, which is exactly the point.

Several Sagres surf schools use Tonel as their default teaching beach, so expect plenty of beginners and instructors, especially through the morning. Come at low-to-mid tide on a small swell for the calmest water, and treat it as your reset day between bigger sessions elsewhere on the coast.

Meia Praia

A long, gentle sandy beach stretching east from Lagos marina, and the easiest wave in the whole Algarve for a first day on a surfboard. Meia Praia is flat, wide and forgiving, with soft, slow-breaking peaks that give beginners plenty of time to stand up before the wave closes in.

Because it faces more south-east than the exposed west-coast points, it stays smaller and calmer even when a big swell is pounding Arrifana or Bordeira, which makes it the reliable back-up plan on the wilder days. The wide beach also means there's always room, even when Lagos is busy with summer tourists.

Come at any tide on a small swell for the easiest conditions. It's the default lesson beach for Lagos surf schools, and a genuinely pleasant, low-stakes spot to end a trip with a relaxed final session before flying home from Faro.

Rocha Negra (Black Rock)

Known locally as Black Rock, this quality righthander near Lagos gets less attention than the town's beginner beaches but rewards those who find it. Rocha Negra breaks over a rock reef, holding good size and shape when a solid swell wraps into this stretch of coast.

It sits among a scatter of lesser-known reef setups around Lagos that locals favour over the crowded main beach. Come on a moderate-to-solid swell for the best conditions, and expect a more committed, experienced crowd than at Meia Praia.

Mareta

Like Tonel nearby, it's a natural fallback when the bigger points are blown out or too powerful. Come on a small swell at any tide for the easiest conditions, and enjoy Sagres' laid-back surf-town atmosphere right on the doorstep.
