The wave
Matosinhos is Porto's city beach, at the end of the metro line. The harbour jetties shelter it and help hold the sandbanks, so it has more shape than most of the open beaches nearby.
It's best on a clean groundswell with light wind, and onshore wind ruins it quickly. The water is cold all year, the lineup is busy with locals on good days, and surf schools work here too. Easy to combine with a few days in Porto.
