Right in front of Ericeira's old town, Reef is the wave locals grew up on: a punchy left-hand reef break that gives the town its year-round surfing identity. Breaking a short paddle from the harbour wall, it throws a workable, wally left that holds a good amount of size and rewards a surfer who likes to hit the lip.
It is more forgiving than the region's famous right points but still a proper reef wave, breaking over rock ledges that shallow up fast at low tide. On a clean NW or W swell with light wind, Reef turns into a satisfying, punchy left that's rarely empty, since it sits directly below the cliffside cafés where half the town watches the swell come in.
Expect a strong, settled local crowd who surf it daily and know every quirk of the reef. It's a good step up from the beginner beaches once you're comfortable in real Atlantic conditions, and one of the easiest world-class-flavoured waves in Europe to walk to from your bed.

The name is not marketing. Crazy Left is a heavy, hollow left-hand reef break just along the coast from Ericeira town, and it has one of the more intimidating reputations in the World Surfing Reserve for good reason: a shallow, close-out-prone slab that can go from rideable to genuinely dangerous as the swell builds.
On a clean, well-mannered swell it produces short, thick, barrelling lefts with a real punch, the kind of wave photographers line the cliff for. But it has little patience for hesitation or poor positioning, closing out sections without warning and holding surfers down over an unforgiving rock bottom when it doesn't go to plan.
This is strictly advanced-to-expert territory, best watched from the clifftop before any decision to paddle out. Locals treat it with real respect and expect visitors to do the same. When it's firing and you're ready for it, Crazy Left is one of the most rewarding, adrenaline-heavy waves in the area.

The soft landing of the Ericeira reserve. Foz do Lizandro is a wide, sandy beach break at a gentle river mouth just south of town, throwing forgiving, slow-building peaks that are ideal for a first Atlantic surf lesson or a low-tide mellow session away from the points' crowds and reef.
The sand banks shift with the seasons but generally stay friendlier than anywhere else in the area, breaking further out and giving beginners time to find their feet before the wave closes in. It's the area's default learn-to-surf beach, with several surf schools running lessons here daily in season.
Come at low-to-mid tide on a small-to-moderate swell for the easiest conditions, and expect a much more relaxed, family-friendly vibe than the intense reef line-ups a few minutes up the coast. After a session here, the river mouth and wide beach make a genuinely pleasant spot to just sit in the sun.
