The Algarve's best-known wave: a powerful left-hand point wrapping into a sheltered horseshoe bay below dramatic cliffs. Arrifana catches more swell than almost anywhere on this coast and holds size well, throwing long, workable walls that get better the bigger it gets.

The bay's shape means it can handle a genuinely big swell while staying rideable, with a rockier, more critical section up at the point and a mellower shoulder further into the bay for less experienced surfers to find their feet. Offshore in the prevailing north wind, it's a rare Algarve spot that stays clean through a real Atlantic blow.

Come on a solid W or NW groundswell, watch the rocks at the point on lower tides, and expect a healthy crowd of vanlifers and surf-camp groups on any good day. Arrifana is the wave that convinces most first-time visitors that the Algarve is more than a beginner coast.

Amado

A wide, exposed beach break just south of Carrapateira, and one of the most consistent stretches of sand on the whole west coast. Amado picks up more swell than almost anywhere in the Algarve, with shifting peaks running along a long stretch of open beach that gives everyone room to spread out.

It's a genuinely good all-rounder: gentler shoulder peaks for improving surfers, and punchier, hollower banks further along for those wanting more power. Because it's so exposed, it can get big and messy fast when the swell builds, so it rewards checking it at different points along the beach before paddling out.

Several surf schools run lessons here, so expect a mixed crowd of beginners and locals scoring the better banks. Come on a small-to-moderate swell for the easiest conditions, and treat it with more respect once it gets overhead, the shorebreak and rips can build quickly.

Bordeira

An enormous, wide-open beach at Carrapateira, and one of the most photogenic stretches of coast in Portugal. Bordeira is a serious swell magnet, funnelling groundswell onto a huge sandbank system that produces powerful, hollow beach-break peaks when it's working well.

The scale of the beach is the whole story here: with that much sand to break along, banks shift constantly and a short walk can find you a completely different wave. On its day it throws genuinely heavy, barrelling peaks that draw experienced beachbreak specialists, but it can also be gentle and forgiving in smaller swells.

This is a spot that rewards patience and a willingness to walk the beach checking banks. Strong rips are a real hazard once it has any size, so it's best suited to confident intermediate surfers and up. Bring a wetsuit whatever the season, the open exposure keeps the water moving and cool.

Cordama

A short, tubing beachbreak a few kilometres north of Arrifana, with a couple of other quality peaks nearby that pick up more swell as it builds. Cordama holds a good size and can throw genuinely hollow, satisfying barrels when the banks are right.

The road here is dusty and unmarked, keeping it far less visited than Arrifana despite similar quality. Come on a moderate W-NW swell, and treat it as a quieter alternative when the more famous points along this coast are crowded.
