The wave
Playa Malibú is located near the small oceanside community of Gorgona. This rivermouth break always picks up a little more swell than other spots in the area and is surfable at all tides. Count on fast, tubular waves when the Chame River and tidal action combine to shape the black sand, a punchy, hollow beachbreak that's the pick of the coast when the banks are firing.
Underwater trees are just one of the rivermouth's hazards, so it pays to know the spot, but the reward is a consistent, barrelling wave close to Panama City. Between Punta Chame and the capital the swell is blocked by Punta Chame itself, making Malibú the reliable swell-catcher of the stretch.
Keep it for a south-west swell across the tides and look for the fast, tubular sections the river builds. Playa Malibú is the standout beachbreak of West Panamá, consistent, hollow and surfable on any tide, a favourite day-trip wave for Panama City surfers, with real barrels when the Chame River sand lines up.
