West Java's surf capital and the honest workhorse of the whole coast. Cimaja is a right point over rounded boulders near Pelabuhan Ratu, walling, occasionally hollow, and remarkably consistent: if the Indian Ocean is breathing, Cimaja is breaking.
The point organises swell into readable sets: a steep-ish takeoff by the boulders, a long workable wall, and a faster inside when the tide drops. 3-6ft on morning offshores is the daily bread; solid swells bring genuine punch and a current that keeps you paddling. Mid tide is kindest to your fins and your feet, the boulders are round but they're still rocks.
The scene is Indonesia before the brochures: losmen for pocket change, warungs with sweet jahe tea, a local crew that's surfed it for generations and appreciates a polite visitor. Jakarta is 4-5 hours away, which keeps weekends busy and weekdays blissful. Board: everyday shortboard. Use Cimaja as your base camp for the wilder coast south, the fixers here arrange everything from Panaitan boats to Ombak Tujuh missions.

Sawarna (Ciantir)

A huge golden-black bay that takes the Indian Ocean's first punch. Sawarna (Ciantir beach) is raw beach-break power along two kilometres of sand, plus a walling right off the reef at the western end when the swell organises, all framed by palms, karst cliffs and a village that still treats surfers as pleasant curiosities.
The beach break shifts with the banks: wedgy peaks, fast walls, proper barrels on the right sandbar day. It picks up everything, so what's 3ft in Bali is often 5ft here, and 5ft Sawarna means business, with rips to match. Mornings before the sea breeze are the window; the afternoon reliably deteriorates.
Homestays cost less than a Canggu smoothie bowl and put you two minutes from the sand. Phone signal is patchy, nightlife is a bonfire, and the loudest sound at dawn is the ocean. Board: shortboard, plus a step-up if a real swell is forecast. Combine with Cimaja (90 minutes) for West Java's classic one-two.

Ombak Tujuh

'Seven Waves', named for the orderly lines that stack to the horizon when a long-period SW swell arrives. Ombak Tujuh is a heavy left off the rocks near Ujung Genteng, one of Java's most respected waves and one of its least surfed, because everything about reaching it is a filter.
The access: a motorbike track through plantations and along the sand, forty-plus minutes from Ujung Genteng village, boards strapped sideways, river crossings included. The wave: thick, powerful walls that jack off a boulder-reef shelf and grind for a hundred metres-plus, with barrel sections that reward the brave and punish the late. 4-10ft, E winds offshore, experts genuinely only.
There are no facilities, no warung, no help, no shade. Bring water, a repair kit, and ideally a local guide from the village (small money, huge value: they know the paddle-out and the moods). The reward for all of it is world-class waves with a lineup of two, in a corner of Java that tourism forgot. That trade has a name: worth it.

One Palm Point

The wave that launched a thousand boat trips. One Palm Point peels down the southwest corner of Panaitan Island in Ujung Kulon National Park, a left that barrels with such length and geometry it looks animated: whole ten-second sections of spinning tube over a coral shelf with barely enough water to float a fin.
Everything about it is expedition-grade. Access is charter boat only (2-4 day trips from Sumur or arranged via Cimaja), the park is genuine wilderness, Javan rhinos inland, crocodiles in the anchorage estuaries, monkeys auditing your camp, and the wave itself is among the shallowest serious barrels in surfing. Booties, helmet-optional-but-sensible, and a spare board are not suggestions.
When a clean 5-8ft SW swell meets SE trades and a kind tide, surfers describe One Palm sessions in the tone people reserve for religious events. When it's not on, the trip is still jungle, empty reefs and phosphorescent nights at anchor. Pro-level barrel riders only in the water; everyone else can crew the channel and film history.

Apocalypses

One Palm's right-handed twin on the other side of Panaitan, and if anything, the more aptly named of the pair. Apocalypses (locals drop the 's', charts don't) is a right that drains down its own coral shelf with the same brutal elegance: warp-speed walls, sudden square barrels, and a reef that starts where mercy ends.
It needs the same recipe, solid SW swell, SE trades, a boat and nerve, but its angle means it sometimes fires when One Palm is fractionally off, which is why charters anchor between the two and let the morning decide. Rides are shorter than One Palm's marathon tubes but hit harder off the drop.
This is the second act of the Panaitan pilgrimage: national-park wilderness, no infrastructure, no rescue beyond your boat, and waves that end careers or define them. The standard applies, genuine experts only, booties always, ego left on the mainland. For everyone else, the channel view of a proper Apocalypses session is itself worth the crossing.

Turtles

The gentle secret of Java's turtle coast. Off Ujung Genteng, where green turtles still haul up the sand at Pangumbahan to nest, Turtles the wave offers walling rights over friendly reef, far from any scene and usually from any other surfer.
It's the accessible counterweight to Ombak Tujuh up the coast: where that wave demands expertise and a motorbike odyssey, Turtles asks only for a decent S/SW swell, a morning offshore and the initiative to be in Ujung Genteng at all. Faces run shoulder-to-overhead with room to turn, over a reef with actual water on it. Intermediates who've done their reef apprenticeship will thrive.
The town is a fishing-and-farming outpost with simple losmen, seafood grills, and the turtle sanctuary as the evening entertainment, watching a leatherback dig at midnight beats any beach club. Bring cash, patience with the roads, and days without a plan. This is slow-travel surfing: modest logistics, honest waves, and stories with no crowds in them.

Loji

The overflow valve of Pelabuhan Ratu bay. Loji is the long black-sand stretch south of the fishing port where West Java's swell lands as shifting beach-break peaks, fast walls, occasional freight-train lefts off the better banks, and volcanic-sand power that surprises surfers expecting a 'beach break' to be soft.
Its role in a Cimaja-based trip is tactical: when the point is crowded, small, or wrong-tide, Loji usually has a bank working somewhere along its kilometres. Read the water from the coast road, park by the nearest warung, and paddle at the peak nobody else chose. Mornings only in the dry season, the sea breeze arrives punctually and ruins everything.
Hazards are the beach-break basics amplified: rips along the banks, a shore-dump at high tide, and murky water after river rains. Board: everyday shortboard. There's no scene here at all, fishermen, a couple of warungs, black sand to the horizon, which after a week anywhere fashionable is precisely the medicine.

Where to stay near West Java
- Cimaja Square Hotel — Surf hotel: The modern option in Cimaja village: pool, proper mattresses and a two-minute walk from the boulder point. Popular with Jakarta surfers, book weekends early.
- Hotel Augusta Pelabuhan Ratu — Seafront hotel: Long-established seafront hotel on the bay between Cimaja and town, sea-view rooms, a pool and easy logistics for exploring the whole coast.
- Villa Sawarna — Beach villa & rooms: The most comfortable base at Sawarna beach, minutes from Ciantir's peaks and the karst caves. Handy when you want to surf the eastern breaks for a few days.
Beyond the surf
- Pelabuhan Ratu fish market: One of Java's biggest fishing ports, the dawn auction is chaotic, photogenic and utterly real. Grilled fish warungs along the harbour do lunch straight off the boats.
- Sawarna village & Karang Taraje: A karst-country village of homestays behind Ciantir beach, with the Karang Taraje reef ledge throwing spray at its southern end. Limestone caves dot the hills behind.
- Karang Hawu cliff: The lava headland west of Cimaja, wrapped in Nyai Roro Kidul legend, locals leave offerings to the Queen of the South Sea. Sweeping views over the bay.
- Ujung Kulon & Panaitan Island: The UNESCO park at Java's southwestern tip: the last Javan rhinos, empty jungle coast and Panaitan's perfect reefs, reached only by chartered boat from Sumur.
