Surfing West Bali

Medewi and Balian, long lefts and slow village days.

The waves at West Bali

Medewi

  • Point Break
  • Beginner / Intermediate
  • 2-6 ft
  • Apr-Oct
  • Crowd 3/5

Bali's longest ride and its slowest afternoon, in the best sense. Medewi is a soft left point peeling over rounded boulders and sand for 200-400 metres, a wave you measure in leg-burn rather than seconds, made for longboards, mid-lengths, and anyone who thinks surfing peaked with the cross-step.

Dawn is everything here: the land breeze grooms it glassy until mid-morning, and the takeoff boulder zone organises even small swell into orderly, endless walls. It handles up to 6ft, when the point shows surprising push and the rides stretch toward absurd.

The village is a Muslim fishing community that has hosted surfers for decades without becoming a scene: a handful of guesthouses, warungs with point views, prayer calls over the lineup, rice fields behind. Two hours from Canggu, it's the classic overnight mission, surf sunset, sleep fifty metres from the point, surf dawn, drive home changed. Board: bring the log. Booties help at low tide over the boulders. Respect the mellow local pace, it's the whole point.

Balian

  • Reef Break
  • Intermediate / Advanced
  • 3-8 ft
  • Apr-Oct
  • Crowd 3/5

The moody artist of west Bali. Balian breaks at a rivermouth where black sand meets jungle, shifting A-frame peaks, lefts and rights, that rearrange with every wet-season flood and dry-season swell. It's bigger, rawer and less predictable than Medewi down the road, and that's its appeal.

It hoovers up swell (often 2ft bigger than Canggu), works best on morning offshores at mid tide, and offers everything from playful 3ft sessions to solid 8ft walls with weight behind them. The peaks reward surfers who read banks and currents rather than follow the crowd, often the best wave is a hundred metres from the pack.

The village above has evolved into a quiet traveller enclave: villas in the palms, a yoga shala, good coffee, zero nightlife. Perfect for surf-write-repeat weeks. Practical notes: the river stains the lineup brown for a day or two after heavy rain (skip it, upstream runoff is real), and the currents at size are strong. Board: shortboard plus something with volume for the mornings.

Where to stay near West Bali

  • Gede Homestay — Homestay: Simple rooms directly at the Medewi point, roll out of bed, check the lineup from the yard. Family-run, surfer-priced and famously welcoming.
  • Bombora Medewi Wave Lodge — Surf lodge: Purpose-built surf lodge overlooking the point: pool, restaurant and boards at the ready. The most comfortable option within a minute's walk of the wave.
  • Pondok Pitaya — Beachfront hotel: Balian's classic surf hotel, right on the sand at the river mouth with antique Javanese joglo rooms. Restaurant, yoga and the peak 50 m away.

Beyond the surf

  • Rambut Siwi sea temple: A serene clifftop temple complex ten minutes from Medewi, overlooking black sand and empty surf. One of west Bali's holiest sites and almost tourist-free.
  • Balian river mouth: Black volcanic sand, a jungle river meeting the sea and a village that still moves at farming pace. The antithesis of south Bali, this is why people stay weeks.
  • West Bali National Park & Menjangan: Bali's wildest corner: savannah, monsoon forest and Menjangan island's wall dives and snorkelling, the best coral in Bali. A long day trip or overnight from Medewi.
  • Jatiluwih rice terraces: UNESCO-listed terraces on Batukaru's slopes, en route between Canggu and the west coast. Vast, green and far less crowded than Tegallalang.
