The wave

Afulu is on the northwest coast of Nias, near the village with the same name, along a rough coast road. It's a short, hollow right over shallow lava reef, and very few people surf it.

The takeoff is quick, then there's a barrel over dark rock and a short wall. It works at 3-8ft on SW swell with east winds. The tide matters a lot, because at low the reef is very shallow. It's for advanced surfers, though easier than the famous slabs in the south.

There are no camps or board rentals and few beds. Go as a day trip from Lagundri or ask a driver to arrange a homestay. Bring everything you need, and be polite to the locals in the water.
