The waves at Kuta Lombok

Mawi

  • Reef Break
  • Advanced
  • 3-10 ft
  • May-Sep
  • Crowd 3/5

South Lombok's power plant. Mawi sits in a horseshoe bay west of Kuta and inhales every SW swell going, an A-frame over reef where the left is the star: a steep, wedging drop into a fast wall that barrels through the inside on the right tide. The right is shorter, rampier, and underrated.

It's the area's serious wave: consistent, powerful, and unforgiving of hesitation. Ideal window is 3-8ft on a mid tide with dry-season trades (E/SE) blowing offshore into the bay. Beyond 8ft it's a paddle-fitness exam with a strong faculty.

The famous hazard is the rip along the western rocks, a conveyor belt that doubles as the easiest paddle-out in Indonesia if you use it deliberately, and a problem if you don't. The dirt road in has improved; the crowd has followed, though dawn still belongs to the committed few. Board: shortboard with paddle, step-up over 6ft. No warung reliability, bring water. This is the wave Kuta Lombok intermediates graduate toward, and it's worth the apprenticeship.

Tanjung A'an

  • Beach Break
  • Beginner
  • 1-4 ft
  • Year-round
  • Crowd 2/5

The most beautiful beginner wave in Indonesia, no serious challengers. Tanjung A'an is a kilometre of powder-white sand around water so turquoise it looks colour-graded, with soft peelers breaking over sand and scattered coral in the middle of the bay.

The waves roll rather than break: knee-to-chest-high, slow, endlessly forgiving, the place where south Lombok's surf schools push their students into first green waves, and where anyone can rediscover why small waves are joyful. It works year-round; mornings are glass, afternoons bring a sea breeze that bothers no one at this level.

Logistics are barefoot-simple: scooter from Kuta in fifteen minutes, park under the trees, rent a soft-top from the beach shack, surf, then lunch at a stilted warung with your feet over the water. Climb Bukit Merese at the west end for the sunset that fills every Lombok postcard. Hazards: sunburn and the strong urge to cancel your onward travel. For families and first-timers, this bay alone justifies the flight.

Seger

  • Reef Break
  • Intermediate / Advanced
  • 2-6 ft
  • May-Sep
  • Crowd 2/5

Kuta's five-minute wave, and the locals' favourite secret-in-plain-sight. Seger breaks on the reef just east of town, a punchy right (plus a shorter left) that wedges off the outside coral and offers steep takeoffs, quick walls and the occasional cover-up, all within scooter distance of your breakfast.

It switches on with tide and swell more than most: mid tide on a 3-6ft S swell is the recipe, and the difference between flat and firing can be two hours. That volatility keeps the crowd honest, check it, surf it if it's on, and it's often just you and a few regulars who read the window right.

The wave rewards a direct approach: take off deep, drive through the first wall, and hit the inside ramp before the reef shallows. Board: everyday shortboard. Watch for urchins on the inside at lower tides. Between the convenience, the punch, and the sunrise directly behind the peak, Seger quietly delivers more quality sessions per season than the famous names, the definition of a local's wave.

Inside Ekas

  • Reef Break
  • Intermediate
  • 2-6 ft
  • May-Sep
  • Crowd 1/5

The slow-motion secret of Lombok's giant bay. Inside Ekas peels along the sheltered eastern reef of a bay so vast it makes crowds mathematically impossible, playful, walling rights (and lefts on the right bank) over forgiving coral, with all the urgency of a Sunday afternoon.

The bay's geometry filters ocean chaos into order: what arrives here is groomed, sized-down and lined-up, making Inside Ekas the thinking intermediate's paradise, real reef waves with real shape and genuinely low consequence. 2-6ft, mid tide, and the sheltered position laughs at wind that ruins the open coasts.

Getting there is the charm and the moat: a boat from Awang across the bay (arrange at the beach, split with your crew) or the long-way-around drive to the Ekas peninsula's lodges. Either way you surf with fishing platforms as your lineup markers and a horizon empty of everything. Stay a night at one of the clifftop retreats and the bay becomes your private training facility. Board: anything fun, fish, mid-length, standard shortboard all belong.

Inside Gerupuk

  • Reef Break
  • Beginner / Intermediate
  • 2-5 ft
  • Year-round
  • Crowd 3/5

The most dependable wave in Lombok, and the bay that built Kuta's surf economy. Inside Gerupuk (Bumbang side) is a rolling right over deep, friendly reef inside a huge natural harbour, it breaks 350-plus days a year, scales from waist-high runners to head-high walls, and forgives essentially everything.

The ritual is half the charm: boats shuttle from Gerupuk village jetty (a few euros return, boards stacked crosswise), drop you at the peak, and wait at anchor while you surf. Schools bring students at every level; the wave sorts everyone onto the right section, learners on the shoulder, intermediates at the peak working on their first real turns.

Mornings are glassiest, but the bay's shelter means afternoon sessions survive wind that ruins the open coast. This is where you fix your bottom turn, log your hundredth wave, build the confidence for Mawi and the outer reefs. Board: whatever's next in your progression. The village warungs' post-surf mie goreng, eaten on the jetty watching boats unload boards and grins, is the taste of learning to surf in Indonesia.

Outside Ekas

  • Reef Break
  • Advanced / Pro
  • 4-10 ft
  • May-Sep
  • Crowd 1/5

The serious end of the big bay. Outside Ekas guards the mouth of the bay on the exposed reef, a left of real consequence that inhales S/SW swell and converts it into long, jacking walls with hollow sections and open-ocean push behind every one.

It's south Lombok's step-up wave: handles double-overhead-plus while Kuta's bays max out, offers rides that stack three or four sections deep, and demands the paddle fitness and reef judgement that the Inside politely never asks for. E-season trades work fine; mid tide keeps the takeoff honest; 4-10ft is its conversation range.

Access is by boat (same Awang logistics, longer ride) and the trip curates the lineup, you'll share it with a handful of surfers who planned their day around it, plus lodge guests from the peninsula who watched it from breakfast. Deep water behind the peak means clean waiting; the impact zone means committed catching. Board: step-up. Do the classic Ekas double: Outside until your arms protest, Inside to remember that surfing is fun.

Outside Gerupuk

  • Reef Break
  • Intermediate / Advanced
  • 3-8 ft
  • May-Sep
  • Crowd 3/5

The graduation ceremony at the mouth of the bay. Outside Gerupuk (Kids Point) is an A-frame on the outer reef that receives open-ocean SW swell before the bay tames it, a proper wave with a proper takeoff: the right runs long toward the channel, the left is shorter and punchier.

It handles from head-high to double-overhead, and its character shifts with size: playful performance walls at 4ft, shifting consequential peaks at 8ft that reward wave-knowledge and paddle fitness. Dry-season trades groom it; mid tide keeps the reef polite.

Same boat logistics as the Inside (tell your boatman 'Outside'), which means the crowd is self-selecting: schools stay in the bay, and the outer peak gathers intermediates stepping up and travelling surfers who've done their research. Sit wide of the boil on the right, read two waves before committing, and use the channel generously. Board: everyday shortboard, step-up past 6ft. Surf the Inside at dawn, the Outside at mid-morning tide, and you've had Lombok's perfect progression day in one bay.

Don-Don

  • Reef Break
  • Intermediate
  • 2-6 ft
  • Year-round
  • Crowd 2/5

The bay's quiet middle child, and the smart surfer's default. Don-Don peaks in the heart of Gerupuk bay between the Inside and Outside, an A-frame over deep-ish reef that offers genuine walls both ways without the Outside's consequence or the Inside's student traffic.

It needs a touch more swell than the Inside to break properly, and when it does, it delivers the bay's best effort-to-reward ratio: shoulder-to-overhead faces, room to carve, a takeoff that asks for commitment but not perfection. The boat crews know it as the overflow peak, which means it's often half as crowded as its neighbours for eighty percent of the quality.

Conditions logic mirrors the bay: sheltered from most wind, best mid tide, surfable when the open coast is chaos. This makes Don-Don the canonical afternoon second session, morning at the Outside, lunch on the boat, then empty walls here while the day-trippers head in. Board: everyday shortboard or a fish on the smaller days. Nothing about Don-Don makes headlines; everything about it makes good trips.

Air Guling

  • Reef Break
  • Intermediate / Advanced
  • 2-6 ft
  • May-Sep
  • Crowd 1/5

The bay the scooters skip. Air Guling sits halfway between Kuta and Mawi, a wide, quiet curve of sand and reef with a right peeling off the eastern point, a left down the western end, and a beach-break middle that shifts with the banks. No signposts, one warung, rarely more than three surfers.

It needs a decent S/SW swell to wake up (the bay's angle filters smaller pulses), which is exactly why it stays empty: on the obvious days everyone commits to Mawi or the Gerupuk boats, and Air Guling's point quietly reels off overhead walls for nobody. Dry-season mornings with E trades are clean; mid tide covers the inner reef.

This is exploration-lite: real search-and-score satisfaction with a fifteen-minute scooter commute and zero logistics. Bring water, cash for the warung (fresh coconuts, instant noodles, perfect), and manage expectations, it's a very good wave on its day rather than a world-beater. But surfing overhead walls alone in a bay this beautiful recalibrates what 'very good' means.
