The best wave in the world, according to a poll of people who've made one. Desert Point, Bangko-Bangko, is a freak of bathymetry at Lombok's southwest tip: a left that begins as a soft shoulder and grows as it drains down the reef, the barrel stretching longer and rounder until, on the day of the year, riders emerge from fifteen-second tubes with a thousand-yard stare.
It needs everything aligned: a long-period SW swell of real size, SE trades, and a dropping tide toward low, the lower the tide, the longer and shallower the miracle. That alignment happens perhaps a dozen days per season, which is why the world's best tube riders monitor it like a stock ticker and strike from Bali on 24 hours' notice.
The price list: razor reef inches below the best sections, rips at the end bowl, a losmen-only camp scene with no ATM and no rescue, and weeks of flatness between events. Experts only, and honestly: experts with humility. Everyone else, go on a pumping day and watch history from the cliff. That's not a consolation prize; it's one of surfing's great spectacles.

- Desert Point Lodges — Surf lodges: Simple bungalows metres from the paddle-out at Bangko-Bangko. When the forecast lines up, this is the only address that matters, book the moment you see purple on the charts.
- Bola Bola Paradis — Beach hotel: Comfortable beachfront bungalows on the Sekotong peninsula, a real bed, a restaurant and a pool within striking distance of the point on smaller days.
- Ko-Ko-Mo Resort Gili Gede — Island resort: Polished villas over the water on Gili Gede with a dive centre and proper restaurant. The comfort base across the bay for the swell-window waiting game.
Beyond the surf
- Bangko-Bangko headland: The wild southwestern cape where Desert Point peels, dry-forest hills, a lighthouse track and one of the world's best lefts breaking over the shelf below.
- Gili Gede island: The largest of the secret southwest Gilis, a short boat hop across the bay: fishing villages, calm-water swimming and a handful of laid-back resorts.
- Gili Layar & Gili Asahan snorkelling: Healthy shallow reefs and seagrass turtle meadows around the outer southwest islets. Charter a local outrigger from Tembowong for a half-day loop.
- Mekaki Bay: A vast, usually empty crescent of sand on the road to Bangko-Bangko, worth the stop on every Deserts run, and a genuine castaway swim.
