The waves at Canggu

Canggu-Batu Bolong

  • Beach Break
  • Intermediate
  • 2-5 ft
  • Todo el año
  • Crowd 4/5

The most social wave in Bali. Batu Bolong peels over a flat lava shelf in front of Canggu's old temple, serving long, gentle walls in both directions, the left is longer, that seem designed for progression: soft takeoff, endless shoulder, deep water, forgiving reef.

It works year-round on almost any swell, from knee-high log days to overhead wet-season pulses, and it's offshore on the E/SE trades every dry-season morning. The lineup is the United Nations of surfing: loggers cross-stepping, kids on foamies, weekend warriors and the occasional pro warming up, all somehow coexisting. Wave count requires patience and positioning, sit slightly wide of the main peak and pick off the ones the crowd misses.

Longboard or mid-length is the correct equipment; a shortboard works only on the punchier days. Rent anything from the racks on the sand. Post-surf: coconut on the beach, breakfast at the strip, repeat at sunset with the whole town watching from Old Man's. Pure Canggu.

Kuta Beach

  • Beach Break
  • Beginner
  • 1-3 ft
  • Todo el año
  • Crowd 5/5

Where Bali surfing started and where yours might too. Kuta Beach is kilometres of sand-bottom peaks rolling toward the most famous tourist strip in Indonesia, soft, crumbly, endlessly forgiving waves that have taught more people to surf than possibly anywhere else on Earth.

The machinery is frictionless: schools every fifty metres, boards for rent on the sand, instructors who push you into your first green wave within the hour. Waves range from whitewater rollers on the inside to proper shoulder-high peaks out back on a decent swell. Water is bath-warm, the bottom is sand, and the only real hazards are other learners' loose boards, keep your eyes up.

Mornings are cleanest; afternoons get onshore and busy but stay surfable. Rainy season brings murkier water after storms. Once you're linking turns here, graduate north to Canggu or across to Kuta Reef. It's not cool, it's not quiet, and it doesn't care, Kuta is a rite of passage, and a genuinely great one.

Airport Rights

  • Reef Break
  • Intermediate / Advanced
  • 3-8 ft
  • May-Sep
  • Crowd 3/5

The runway wave. Airport Rights breaks off the reef at the end of Ngurah Rai's landing strip, you sit in the lineup watching A330s float overhead every few minutes, which never stops being surreal.

The wave is a long, lined-up right with a mellow-for-Bali takeoff and walls that hold shape for a hundred metres-plus on a good SW swell. Mid tide is the window; the reef is flat and relatively kind by Bukit standards. It's many surfers' first proper Bali reef wave, and the perfect intermediate graduation from the beach breaks.

Access is by boat, jukungs wait on Jimbaran beach and at Kelan, around $10-15 return per surfer, and the ride matters: they know the channel and will anchor with a view of your session. The boat requirement caps the crowd at manageable. Dry-season mornings with SE trades are clean and glassy. Board: standard shortboard; bring water and sun protection because there's no shade in the channel and sessions stretch long.

Airport Lefts

  • Reef Break
  • Intermediate / Advanced
  • 3-8 ft
  • May-Sep
  • Crowd 3/5

The goofy-footer's answer on the other side of the runway. Airport Lefts walls up along the reef's western edge with longer, slightly softer faces than its right-hand twin, a down-the-line left that rewards flow over aggression, with sections that let you build real speed between turns.

It handles more tide than most Bali reefs and organises even messy swell into rideable lines, which makes it the smart call on days the forecast looks confused. Size range: fun from 3ft, serious by 8ft, when the walls stretch and the channel current starts working.

Boat access from Kelan or Jimbaran (same jukungs as the Rights, tell the boatman which peak). The crowd is thinner than the Rights on most days, heavier on obvious ones. Watch the tide plan: the reef inside gets shallow toward low, and the boat isn't coming into the impact zone to save your fins. Board: something with a bit of length and glide. The sunset session, with planes lighting up above and Jimbaran's grills firing below, is quietly one of Bali's great moments.

Kuta Reef

  • Reef Break
  • Intermediate / Advanced
  • 2-6 ft
  • May-Sep
  • Crowd 3/5

The original boat wave of Bali, surfed since the seventies and still delivering. Kuta Reef is a left that peels over coral three hundred metres off Tuban beach, a proper wave with a playful heart: peeling walls, cover-up sections at mid tide, and a paddle-friendly channel alongside.

At 3-5ft on a SW swell with morning trades it's close to perfect intermediate reef surfing: enough push to feel real, enough water over the coral to forgive mistakes. Bigger swells add serious speed and start connecting sections. Dead low exposes the reef's teeth, plan around mid tide, ideally pushing.

Jukung boats run from Tuban beach (haggle politely, ~$10 return) and anchor in the channel; some surfers paddle the whole way, but the boat saves your shoulders for the session. Crowd is steady but polite, a mix of Kuta graduates and old regulars who've surfed it for decades. Board: everyday shortboard. Finish the session with grilled corn on Tuban beach and watch the next crew paddle out.

Echo Beach

  • Beach Break
  • Intermediate / Advanced
  • 2-6 ft
  • Year-round
  • Crowd 4/5

Canggu with its teeth showing. Echo Beach is the punchy peak of the strip: a left off the rocky corner that stands up, throws, and occasionally barrels properly, plus shifting rights along the sand, all faster and more consequential than Batu Bolong's gentle walls three hundred metres south.

It picks up every scrap of swell going, works year-round, and turns from playful to serious quickly when a solid SW pulse arrives; overhead Echo is a genuinely good wave with a genuinely committed crowd. Mornings before the E/SE trades die are the window; afternoons blow out and hand the beach to the sunset crowd.

The scene is inseparable from the surf: La Brisa's reclaimed-wood terraces and the beach bars fill every evening, boards stacked against driftwood fences, bonfire smoke and DJ sets over the paddle-out. Board: standard shortboard with paddle. Hazards: rocks at the left's takeoff, rips on bigger days, and photographers immortalising your worst wipeouts. The complete modern-Bali surf experience in one beach.

Berawa

  • Beach Break
  • Intermediate
  • 2-5 ft
  • Year-round
  • Crowd 3/5

The pressure valve of Canggu. When Batu Bolong is a floating crowd and Echo's peak has forty surfers on it, Berawa's sandbars keep shifting quietly in front of Finns, lefts and rights that reform with every season, rarely perfect, rarely bad, and reliably less populated than everything around them.

It's a true beach break: peaks move, tides matter more than charts admit, and the best bank might be a hundred metres from where it was last month. That variability is the gift, walk the beach, read the water, and you'll often find your own peak in the busiest surf town in Indonesia.

Best on a mid tide with morning offshores, 2-5ft; bigger swells bring rips that demand respect and provide free trips back to the lineup if you use them wisely. Board: whatever develops your surfing, it's a great training wave. The beach club backdrop means fresh juice, pools and showers fifty steps from the sand. Ideal for mixed-ability crews: everyone gets something.

  • Pererenan rice fields: The last working rice terraces of the strip, best explored by bicycle on the back lanes between Pererenan and Cemagi. Early morning light is spectacular.
  • Old Man's sunset scene: Beers on the grass, longboarders trading party waves and food trucks at golden hour. Love it or hate it, it's the definitive Canggu evening.
