The surf-town heart of Gironde, and host to its own long-running professional contest, the Lacanau Pro. Lacanau-Océan's beach breaks pick up consistent Atlantic groundswell along a wide stretch of sand, producing punchy, well-shaped peaks without quite the extreme intensity of Hossegor further south.
The town has grown entirely around surfing, with schools, shops and a youthful, sociable atmosphere that peaks each August around contest time. Multiple named peaks run along the beach, giving options depending on the day's bank and crowd, from mellower sections to punchier, hollower ones.
Come on a clean groundswell at low-to-mid tide for the friendliest conditions, and expect a lively, committed local surf culture. A great all-round base for exploring the quieter, wilder Gironde coast beyond the main strip.

A wilder, more open beach north of Lacanau, backed by pine forest rather than a beach town, and correspondingly emptier even on a good swell day. Le Porge breaks over sand in the same style as the rest of this coast, but with fewer people willing to make the walk from the car park through the dunes.
The reward for that short walk is more space and, often, a less crowded peak than the busier stretches nearer Lacanau or Hossegor. Banks here shift with the season, so it rewards checking a few different spots along the beach before settling in.
Come on a clean groundswell for the best conditions, and bring water and sun protection, facilities are minimal out here. A good choice for those seeking the same quality Atlantic beach break with a genuinely wilder, quieter feel.

Another quiet, forest-backed stretch of the Gironde coast, north of Lacanau and largely bypassed by visitors sticking to the main surf towns. Carcans-Plage breaks over sand in open, exposed peaks, catching the same reliable groundswell as the rest of this coastline with a fraction of the crowd.
This has been a contest venue for decades within the local scene, evidence that the wave quality here holds up despite the relative anonymity compared to Lacanau or Hossegor. The setting, dunes and maritime pine forest running right down to the beach, is classic, unspoiled Gironde.
Come on a clean groundswell for the best shape, and enjoy the relative solitude, this is one of the area's most overlooked quality peaks. A rental car makes reaching it easy from a Lacanau or Bordeaux base.
