Cap Ferret's ocean beaches break over sand in exposed, open peaks, similar in character to the rest of this stretch of French coast but framed by a distinctly chic village atmosphere just behind the dunes.

The peninsula's beaches pick up consistent swell along an uninterrupted stretch of sand, giving room to spread out even when it's busy. Cap Ferret village itself, all oyster shacks and pastel-painted houses, makes a genuinely pleasant base for a trip that mixes surf with good food and a slower pace.

Le Verdon

The wave at the very mouth of the Gironde estuary, where the river meets the open Atlantic at the northern tip of the peninsula. Le Verdon breaks over sand in punchy, well-defined peaks, benefiting from the estuary's currents and sandbar formations to hold a slightly different, often more workable shape than the open beaches further south.

Its position at the meeting point of river and ocean gives it a distinct character within the Gironde stretch, less exposed to the biggest raw swells than Le Porge or Carcans, but often cleaner and more organised as a result. Ferries to Royan cross the estuary nearby, adding a working-harbour feel to the area.

A long, family-oriented beach town further up the Gironde coast, known as much for its naturist tradition as its surf, with beach breaks that stay reliably fun across a wide range of swell sizes. Montalivet's waves break over sand in accessible, well-shaped peaks that suit a broad range of levels.

The nightlife-lit main beach draws the biggest crowds, but nearby stretches offer quieter alternatives when the town itself feels busy in high summer. Being further north on the Gironde coast, it catches the same dependable groundswell as Lacanau and Le Porge with noticeably fewer visiting surfers.

Come on a small-to-moderate swell for the friendliest conditions, and treat it as an easy-going, family-friendly stop on a longer Gironde road trip, rather than a destination in its own right for serious wave-hunters.

Le Mascaret

Not a wind or swell wave at all, but a genuine tidal bore, a wave generated by the incoming tide pushing up the Gironde estuary against the river current. Le Mascaret can be surfed continuously for remarkably long distances, riders literally surfing upriver as the bore travels inland.

It's one of the more unusual surfing experiences in Europe, requiring exact timing with the tide tables rather than any swell forecast. Come with a longboard or dedicated bore board, and check tide charts carefully, this is a wave that waits for no one.
