The wave
Punta Burica itself is super-exposed and produces large peaks breaking on many different offshore reefs in a still largely unexplored area that probably requires a sturdy panga to get to the waves. Straddling the Costa Rica-Panama border at the southern tip of the country, it's a genuine blank on the map, a scattering of reefs with real potential and almost nobody to ride them.
Because it's so exposed, it catches swell others miss, but the logistics are serious: boats, remote jungle, no infrastructure and a long way from help. This is expedition surfing in the truest sense.
Come only if you're equipped for a self-supported mission, a reliable panga, supplies and an adventurous crew, and treat every reef as a discovery. Punta Burica is the wild frontier of Costa Rican surf, a place for the committed few chasing empty, quality peaks in one of the most remote corners of Central America.
