Near the boat-only approach to Drake's Bay, the Rio Sierpe rivermouth can get excellent on an incoming tide, with long, powerful lefts and rights breaking off the shifting sand banks. It's a remote, effort-heavy wave on the edge of the wild Osa Peninsula, and that isolation means quality peaks with nobody around when the river and swell cooperate.
Getting here is a mission, mangrove boat rides, jungle and expensive, scattered accommodation, so it's a spot for the committed traveller rather than the casual visitor. The reward is genuine wilderness surf.
Favour an incoming tide with a solid south-west swell, arrange boat transport, and be self-sufficient. Drake's Bay is a remote spot hidden in the rainforest with expensive accommodation and many breaks to explore, including an offshore reef. On the edge of Corcovado, one of the most biologically intense places on Earth, it's as much an expedition as a surf trip, reached by boat or a bumpy jungle drive and rewarding the adventurous with waves few others ever ride.
The offshore reef and the scattered set-ups around the bay need a good swell and local knowledge to unlock, but the sheer remoteness means empty line-ups and a genuine frontier feel. Wildlife, not crowds, is the company here.
Come on a south-west swell, budget for the pricey lodges and the boat logistics, and treat it as exploration. Drake's Bay isn't about a single wave, it's about a wild corner of the Osa Peninsula where the surf is a bonus on top of some of the richest rainforest and marine life anywhere.

The Rio Claro rivermouth is a superb left where free camping in the jungle is possible, but getting there is a genuine mission. Deep in the Osa wilderness, it throws a long, quality left off the rivermouth banks when the swell lines up, a reward reserved for surfers willing to hike, boat and rough it in exchange for one of the region's best-kept secrets.
There are no facilities beyond what you bring, and the jungle setting is as wild as Costa Rica gets, with the sounds of Corcovado all around. That effort and isolation are exactly what keep the wave pristine and empty.
Favour a solid south-west swell, come self-sufficient with camping gear and supplies, and be ready for a proper adventure to reach it. The Rio Claro is the sort of far-south rivermouth left that surfers dream about, remote, high-quality and utterly uncrowded, deep in one of the planet's wildest coastlines.
