Jacó is Costa Rica's main surf town, packed with hotels, surf shops, bars and discos, and the beachbreak out front matches that easy accessibility. It's an average ride that holds up best at high tide, offering mellow, user-friendly peaks that make it one of the country's great learn-to-surf beaches, and a lively base from which to explore the punchier waves nearby.
What Jacó lacks in wave quality it makes up for in convenience: everything is a short walk, boards and lessons are everywhere, and the nightlife is the busiest on this coast. The beach is long, so the crowd thins if you wander from the main access.
Come on a south-west swell and favour the higher tides for the best shape. Jacó won't blow your mind in the water, but as a comfortable, all-in-one hub with Hermosa and the reefs on its doorstep, it's hard to beat for a first trip.

Roca Loca

Roca Loca is a great right with occasional lefts on a good swell, but it's a hike to get there, and that effort filters the crowd down to those who really want it. Tucked below the headland between Jacó and Hermosa, it breaks over rock and demands respect: barely submerged boulders at low to mid-tide are the sting in its tail.
On the right south-west swell the right-hander stands up fast and clean, offering the kind of drawn-out, rippable wall that Jacó's beachbreak can't. It's a proper reef wave in a coast full of sand, which is exactly why the committed make the scramble.
Time it for a good swell on a higher tide to keep clear of the rocks, board up for a critical take-off, and take heed of the shallow sections. Roca Loca isn't for everyone, but for confident surfers it's one of the quality gems of the central Pacific.

Playa Hermosa

The 7km of black sand at Playa Hermosa is Costa Rica's answer to Puerto Escondido, with less shorebreak drama but plenty of power and rip to scare on the double-overhead days when close-outs rule. Ultra-reliable and swell-hungry, it favours the higher tides and throws heavy, sand-bottom peaks that have humbled many a visiting surfer.
This is where Jacó's beginners graduate, or get a reality check. Competent swimming ability is essential when it's overhead, the currents run hard, and drownings have happened here. It gets less crowded the further south you walk towards Tulín.
Board up for power, respect the rips and pick your peak carefully; Hermosa is not a wave to underestimate. On a clean south-west swell it delivers punchy barrels and hard-breaking walls that reward strong, experienced surfers, and quietly punish everyone who paddles out over their head.

Boca Tusubres

The walk down to Boca Tusubres reveals virgin peaks on the lower tides and bigger, punchier waves than the beaches to the north. It's the reward for surfers willing to trade Hermosa's crowd for a bit of legwork, a quieter, sand-bottom rivermouth stretch that can serve up hard-hitting shape when the swell is running.
Because it takes effort to reach, the line-up stays refreshingly empty, and the banks can organise into genuinely good peaks after the sand has shifted them into place. It's raw, undeveloped coast in the best sense.
Favour the lower tides and a solid south-west swell, bring your legs for the walk and be ready for waves with a bit more grunt than Jacó. Tusubres is the sort of spot that rewards the exploratory surfer, no facilities, no crowd, just punchy peaks and the satisfaction of finding your own.

Esterillos Oeste

South-facing Esterillos Oeste is a long sandy stretch with some lava reefs lying outside, offering relaxed, uncrowded peaks a world away from Jacó's bustle. It's an easy-going beachbreak that suits improvers and anyone after empty waves, with the outer reefs adding a bit of extra shape on the right swell.
The wider Esterillos area, Centro and Este further east, hides even more empty waves on the smaller swells, plus plenty of quiet places to stay, making it a lovely low-key base for a mellow surf trip on the central Pacific.
Come on a clean south-west swell across the tides and simply pick a peak; there's rarely a queue. Esterillos won't deliver the barrels of Hermosa next door, but that's the point, it's the calm, spacious antidote, ideal for long sessions, family trips and surfers who value space over size.
