Dominical is a laid-back surf town, less developed than Jacó and Tamarindo, with a highly consistent, strong, barrelling beachbreak that's the heartbeat of the place. It holds serious size without closing out, gets bigger near the Rio Baru rivermouth, and throws powerful sand-bottom peaks that reward confident surfers, and humble everyone else. Broken boards and drownings are frequent here, so it demands respect.
The town is a mellow, dreadlocked kind of spot, with surf shops, sodas and a slow tropical pace that keeps people lingering for weeks. The wave out front does the rest.
Come on a south-west swell, mind the rivermouth current and the sheer power on the bigger days, and pick your peak carefully. Dominical is one of the most reliable and satisfying beachbreaks in the country for strong intermediates and up, but it is not a place to paddle out over your head.

The protected bay of Dominicalito is popular with beginners and improvers since it's a smaller, softer beachbreak than its heavy neighbour up the road, a sheltered spot to find your feet while Dominical proper does its powerful thing. The bay knocks the size and sting out of the swell, leaving gentle, forgiving peaks ideal for learning and progressing.
The trade-off is a few hidden rocks at low tide, so it pays to have a look before paddling out and to favour more water under you. Otherwise it's an easy, friendly wave in a pretty cove setting, with the jungle right behind the sand.
Come on a south-west swell at mid to high tide and enjoy a stress-free session. Dominicalito is the perfect complement to Dominical, the soft landing where beginners and cautious surfers can enjoy the same swell that's detonating heavily just around the headland.

Punta Dominical

Punta Dominical is a wave of two lives. When it's small, the left is a gentle, playful option that beginners can enjoy, but when it's fuelled by a serious swell it holds up to triple overhead with long, hollow rides that become the preserve of confident, experienced surfers. Go at the higher tides and, whatever you do, don't get caught inside on the big days.
The scenic point, framed by jungle and clifftop restaurants, is one of the prettiest set-ups on the coast, and its huge range means there's usually something rideable for someone.
Read the size before you paddle out: this is a wave that flips from beginner-friendly to genuinely serious with a step up in swell. Favour high tide, respect the power when it's on, and pick the version that matches your level. Few waves in Costa Rica change character quite so dramatically.

The incredibly scenic Playa Hermosa near Uvita benefits from well-shaped waves that usually break half the size of Dominical, making it perfect for beginners, intermediates and longboarders. Where Dominical punishes, this Hermosa forgives, softer, cleaner peaks in a jaw-dropping setting of jungle-clad hills meeting a long golden beach.
It's the ideal spot when Dominical is too big or too heavy, offering the same swell tamed to a friendly size. The relaxed Uvita scene behind it, cafés, waterfalls, the Marino Ballena park, adds plenty to do on the flat days.
Come on a south-west swell across the tides for gentle, well-organised waves that suit turning practice and long, easy rides. Not to be confused with the heavy black-sand Hermosa near Jacó, this Uvita version is all about mellow fun in one of the most beautiful pockets of the whole Pacific coast.

Punta Uvita

Punta Uvita is the gateway to Marino Ballena, the only marine national park in Costa Rica, famous for the sandbar shaped like a whale's tail at low tide. The whale-tail point creates good shelter for the soft, onshore beachbreaks when the area is maxed out and a NW is blowing, making it a handy fallback when everywhere else is unruly.
The waves here are gentle and forgiving, ideal for beginners and easy days, and the setting inside the marine park is spectacular, with humpback whales passing offshore in season and the iconic sandspit to walk out on.
Come on a south-west swell and use the point's shelter when the wind is up elsewhere. Uvita is more about the scenery and the mellow, protected peaks than about performance surf, a beautiful, beginner-friendly spot to pair a soft session with a whale-watching trip or a walk out along the whale's tail.

Playa Ballena is one of the best beginner waves in the area thanks to gently peeling, long rides that give new surfers time and space to learn. Inside the Marino Ballena marine park, it's a quiet, protected stretch where the peaks roll in softly and the crowds are minimal, a genuine find for anyone building confidence.
The wider area rewards exploration: check the uncrowded beaches of Piñuela, Ventanas and the Tortuga rivermouth, or get a boat (or walk) at Ojochal to the Terraba rivermouth, a perfect peeling left for those willing to make the effort.
Come on a south-west swell for long, forgiving walls, and use Ballena as a base to explore the string of empty beaches to the south. It's the mellow, scenic end of the Central Puntarenas coast, ideal for beginners, longboarders and travellers who value calm, uncrowded waves and beautiful surroundings.
