Where the hippos surf

Loango, Gabon (Central Africa)
On Gabon's Atlantic coast, inside Loango National Park, the jungle meets the ocean with no beach town in between. Empty beaches and lagoons that almost no surfer has ever walked, and wildlife that shares your lineup: elephants strolling the sand and, yes, hippos wading out to play in the surf.
It sounds made up. It is not. Nat Geo photographers documented it years ago, and it is still one of the wildest, emptiest coastlines on the planet.
The surf
The real waves are down south. Mayumba is the most exposed stretch of coast to Southern Ocean swell and produces Gabon's most powerful, consistent waves: a big promontory that organises long left-hand lines hugging the point for hundreds of metres. It is also a leatherback turtle nesting ground.
Further north, near Port-Gentil, you find Cap Lopez and a string of spots whose names already tell the story: Palplanche, Guegue, Ekwata, and one called literally La Ferme aux Crocos, the crocodile farm. Beach breaks and river mouths that peel for no one.
Be honest with your expectations: sitting on the equator, Gabon is inconsistent and the swell does not always show. But the water is warm year round, there is barely any wind, and when the dry-season swell arrives it breaks empty from horizon to horizon.
The catch, and it is a big one
This is an expedition, not a holiday. Gabon is expensive and remote. Flights to Libreville, then a small plane or 4x4 or boat to the coast, park permits, malaria pills and total self-sufficiency. There is no surf camp with smoothies waiting. And you share the water with sharks, crocodiles at the river mouths, and the occasional hippo. The golden rule writes itself: check the river mouth before you paddle out.
You do not go to Gabon for the wave of your life. You go to surf where almost no one has, in a place that feels like the edge of the map.
